Math Night at Edgewood Elementary

In our EDUC 376 class, we had the opportunity to attend the Math Night at Edgewood Elementary school. We were put into random groups to create a math game for the grade that we would like to teach. I was paired with a great partner whose Mom was a kindergarten teacher. She was able to borrow funny fly swatters so we made the math game called “Fly Swat.” It is very important for children to know the number pairs that equal 10 so that is what this game teaches in a fun way. We drew the numbers 0 to 10 on the white board. A student stood on each side with a swatter. We would draw a number, say 2, and the student would have to swat the 8, because 8+2=10.

The kids really enjoyed the game and when really young children arrived, my partner let them do number recognition instead of pairing. I thought this was such a great idea on her part.

I learned a lot through this experience and was glad I was able to participate.
