Carole Fullerton – Pro-D Sessions at Van Bien Elementary
For the SD57 Pro-D day, our EDUC 376 Numeracy class was able to attend the three Carole Fullerton sessions at Van Bien. The sessions were primary, intermediate, and middle school. I learned a lot about Cuisenaire Rods that I certainly didn’t know before. There are 10 different rods, each a different colour and each one is measured in centimeters. White is 1 cm while orange is 10 cm. Carole Fullerton taught us how to play games with the students teaching them how to use the rods to learn math. We started with addition and moved into multiplication. We used dice and played with partners as well. It was really fun.
Some examples of using the rods are
- lining the red rods (2 cm long) up end to end and skip counting by 2’s. Write the final number down and check it with your ruler.
- Measuring area by laying rods out
- Learning fractions by stacking one rod on top of the other.
I think children would love to touch the rods, stack them, and play with them. Being able to use these manipulatives was relaxing and learning how to teach with them was mind blowing. I’m so thankful for the opportunity.
